Aspen Tech in the News

MEPTEC MEMS Symposium Report

May 17, 2006

There were over 300 people at the Hyatt in San Jose, attending the 4th annual “MEMS Packaging Trends: From Production to Market”. Presentations on general market and technology trends were very well received by attendees, with excellent follow-up questions. Aspen Technologies was one of 36 exhibitors, with a table located just outside the conference room.

Some classes of MEMS products have evolved into commercially viable products, such as ink jetting and accelerometers. Three MEMS technology areas were discussed as having the best potential for a new round of market success.

  1. Acoustic (speakers and microphones)
  2. Mechanical (gyros and resonators)
  3. Optical (switches and displays)

The portable consumer market, especially cellphones, are expected to drive commercialization of some new MEMS products and technology over the next 2 – 3 years.

The most interesting MEMS technologies discussed were of two types. A small amount of hype seemed to be present, with several people bringing up significant barriers to near term commercialization.
